Important Tips for Recroding

Our AI delivers results quickly and unlocks features like stat reports, 3D visuals, set trajectories and tempos, attack height, and highlight templates—giving you a faster and easier way to analyze, recruit, and share.

To ensure you get the most precise breakdowns from our AI, recording quality is key. Providing clear, sharp footage from the correct angle is the single most important step in optimizing the AI’s performance for accurate and reliable breakdowns.

This email walks you through everything you need to know to get the best results every time:

  1. Recording requirements
  2. Recording and uploading workflows for filmers
  3. What to expect after you upload

Recording Requirements You Need to Know

High-quality breakdowns start with high-quality footage. These steps help ensure your athletes’ movement, numbers, and court positioning are captured clearly.  Here’s how to achieve that:

  • Record in 1080p at 30 or 60 fps. Most newer devices automatically record in these settings. If you're unsure, Google the default recording settings for your device and follow any steps on how to adjust if needed.
  • Use a tripod at a height of 8–10 ft (minimum requirement is 5 ft).
  • Film from the center of the back baseline on your team’s side. If your team switches sides, then switch sides with them.
  • Record horizontally with a standard lens (no wide-angle or .5x lenses). If your camera is automatically in .5 zoom, pinch to zoom in. Below is a visual example of the ideal recording view.
  • Keep all four corners of the opposite court visible.
  • Maintain one continuous recording per set.  If you are using the mobile app, keep the recording running during timeouts. You may pause recording between sets, but do not tap “Save and Exit” until the entire match is over.
  • Limit spectators and equipment in frame.

Recording and Uploading Workflows for Filmers

There are two ways your filmers can record and upload film. Choose which level of access you’d like to give them to the team (athlete-level access or coach-level access). Both options are outlined below.

ACCESS VIA ATHLETE ACCOUNT

unnamed-1
  1. Enable athlete upload access.
A coach will need to log into Hudl on a computer, go to Team → Team Settings → Access, and under Video Upload, select Yes to allow athletes to upload videos. For a visual step-by-step, click this link.
  2. Filmer records on their device.
Parents can film using their phone’s camera. Be sure they follow the recording guidelines.
  3. Upload after the match.
Your filmer will log into the Hudl app, tap Library, tap Upload, then add the files and follow any additional prompts to enter match information.

ACCESS VIA COACH ACCOUNT

unnamed-2
  1. Add the filmer as a team coach.
Log into Hudl on a computer, then go to Team → Team Settings → Add Members. Add the filmer using an invite code or by entering their information manually. Be sure they use an email that is different from any athlete account.
  2. Record, upload, and livestream through the Hudl app.
Once added, the filmer can record directly in the app. Open the Hudl app and log in → tap the menu in the top left → tap Record → select the event (or choose “None” if it’s not listed). Toggle Livestream on if needed, then tap the red circle to start recording.
  3. Upload after the match.
When the match ends, tap Save and Exit. Add a title, choose the video type (Game, Practice, or Scout), then tap Done.

After Uploading

You’re receiving this information because you’re a coach on at least one team with analyst-supported breakdowns. If you’re a coach on multiple teams, some may not have access to this feature.

Your account includes Analyst-supported Breakdowns, making the breakdown process completely hands-free. Once your video is uploaded, the AI breaks down the video and notifies you once it’s complete. After the AI breaks it down, we automatically send the video to our team of analysts, who review the film to add any additional details — for example, identifying an athlete the AI couldn’t capture and adding attack lines.

With this workflow and the latest AI enhancements, proper recording is more important than ever for accurate results.

Just like Hudl Assist, we may ask you to identify a few unknowns to make sure we get you to that 100%
